What causes age spots?

Today it is possible to remove age spots should you get them but it’s helpful to understand the underlying cause to avoid getting them in the first place. The following are some possible causes of age spots.

Hormones

Hormonal changes can lead to overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin. When there is overproduction of melanin, the darker the skin gets. This leads to pigmented areas that look blemished in appearance. The blemishes can be both small and large and are often found on visible areas like the face, arms and legs and back of the hands.

Aging

Production of skin cells slows down as people age. Skin usually appears darker since skin cells also age; the older the cells, the darker the skin. Collagen production also decreases as people age. Collagen is the substance that is responsible in giving our skin a translucent appearance. While some people’s complexion may appear lighter, the blotches and spots will appear much darker. Nevertheless, when you regularly exfoliate, skin darkening due to aging can be avoided.

Alcohol and other Toxins

When someone consumes alcohol excessively, it increases the risk of having age spots. This is because alcohol blocks the ability of the body to absorb important nutrients. Also excessive alcohol consumption is usually accompanied by less nutritious foods. The paradox is that there are skin care products that contain alcohol which may stimulate the production of melanin. Excessive amounts of alcohol on a regular basis can lead to free radical damage. Our body has the capacity to produce antioxidants which fight free radical damage but alcohol inhibits their production leading to skin darkening.

Excessive Sun Exposure

Our body produces more melanin when we are exposed to the sun. The more you are exposed, the darker your skin may get. Sun exposure can lead to age spots including freckles and hyperpigmentation. Too much sun exposure leads to free radical damage. It would be useless to use skin lightening products if you consistently subject yourself to rays of the sun.

If you should end up with age spots there are plenty of ways to get rid of them but some of the most effective methods are our skin lightening products. Find the right product for you and your type of skin or feel free to contact us if you have any questions about what might work best for you.
