Acne scars are often an unfortunate after effect of acne but they can be minimized and even gotten rid of by the use of topical Retin A. Tretinoin or Retin A is a derivative of vitamin A and was originally developed as an acne treatment. It is a great exfoliator that speeds up cell turnover and the exfoliation of dead skin cells while stimulating new cell growth. The effects at first are similar to that of a light chemical peel, usually some redness and later flaking of the skin. This exfoliating process can gradually buff the scars off of the face over time and minimize their appearance.
Retin A also improves the rate that collagen is produced in the dermis which is what fills our skin out from underneath. It is also recommended that the person avoid sunlight and smoking since they both decrease the amount of collagen in the skin. If you must be out in the sun a high SPF mineral based sunscreen is recommended.
Retin A is a miraculous skin care treatment and can help with wrinkles, acne scars, and all sorts of skin ailments but it’s only powerful enough to do so much. If you suffer from deep “ice pick” type acne scars or marks you’ll probably have much better results with a medium depth TCA peel or laser resurfacing. Also it’s advisable to consult with your dermatologist to prevent the formation of new acne to prevent further scarring. There are treatments available and one mustn’t suffer from the after effects of acne scars for the rest of their life.
