Is your sunscreen safe? Whenever you’re using skin lightening products, Retin A, healing a chemical peel or just protecting your skin on a daily basis you need a sunscreen. Chances are if you’re using a non mineral chemical based SPF formula you’re using dangerous chemical ingredients such as avobenzone, oxtinoxate, and oxybenzone. These chemicals are readily absorbed by the skin and have been shown to not only cause increased rates of cancer but also hormonal imbalances, sexual dysfunction, birth defects because of their estrogen like qualities, and Avobenzone can cause free radical damage to the skin. Also many of the chemical formulated sun screens provide less than satisfactory UV protection than the physical blocking mineral based products.
Mineral based products that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have been shown to be much better at blocking the harmful rays of the sun, they also protect your skin and aren’t readily absorbed like the chemical sunscreens. The drawback is that people dislike the chalky look that often accompanies their use. Try mixing your mineral based sunscreen with a little moisturizer. For more of a natural look try mixing it with some foundation or concealer.
So be sure to check the ingredients well when you choose a sunscreen. Also get an SPF of 30 or above for good protection and keep it applied whenever you’re in the sun.
