Botox is a product of Botox Cosmetics and Allergan and contains onabotulinum toxin A for use in cosmetic injections to temporarily treat wrinkles in the frown lines on the forehead or glabellar lines. The effect of BTX-A on wrinkles was originally found by Dr. Richard Clark, and published in the medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1989. Today the use of Botox treatments to treat a number of types of wrinkles has become widespread. It's one of the big secrets of numerous celebrities and Hollywood entertainers to maintain their youthful looks.
How Botox Works
Botox works by selective muscle denervation, when Botox is injected into a muscle that forms a wrinkle when it contracts it will paralyze the muscle and prevent the wrinkle from forming. It functions by blocking the acetylcholine receptors in the muscle which receive the nerve impulses that cause the muscle to contract. This smooths out wrinkles and gives the face a more serene look the effects of which can usually be seen 5-10 days after Botox injections.
What Are Botox Treatments Like?
Botox treatments only require about 10 minutes to perform. First the physician examines the face and determines the best injection points. The injection points are prepped and cleansed with an alcohol scrub and often a lidocaine cream topical anesthetic or cold pack is employed to numb the skin. The injections are then performed and the patient is free to go about their daily activities but should avoid strong sunlight, exerting themselves physically, swimming, and drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours.
Also a promising new techniques for delivering Botox into the skinknown as Meso Botox is becoming popular. Also known as Micro Botox it is the technique of delivering small diluted amounts of Botox into the skin via injections or a micro-needle dermaroller combined with mesotherapy techniques. The diluted Botox substance is rolled into the skin which achieves many of the same wrinkle fighting results as Botox but without the face freezing expressionless effects of normal Botox treatments. Meso Botox is also more useful because it can be used on more areas of the face than standard Botox treatments.
